SYLACAUGA - Winterboro's quarterback showed off his playmaking abilities in the air and on the ground, leading the Bulldogs to 20-14 victory over B.B. Comer at Legion Stadium on Friday.
Junior signal caller Josh Taylor accounted for 136 total yards (60 passing, 76 rushing) and two touchdowns in the second half alone. He scored what became the game-winner by leaping over the Tiger defense into the end zone from the 1-yard line.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs took advantage of a Comer turnover on their own 35-yard line. Taylor ran the ball 35 yards for the score on the second play of the Bulldogs' drive.
Comer answered back on its next drive after returning the ball to the 50 on the ensuing kickoff. Sophomore Khari Kelly capped the 10-play drive by finding the end zone on a second-and-goal play from the 2 with 27 seconds left in the half.
A missed extra point by Comer kept the score at 7-6 entering halftime.
Comer got as far as the Winterboro 25 on their first possession in the third quarter. But a Jamie Sims run on fourth-and-five did not gain the necessary yardage, giving the ball to the Bulldogs.
Two sharp throws by Taylor on their following drive, one to Jalen Whetstone for 44 yards and the other to Colby Maddox for 16, put Winterboro in a first-and-goal situation at the Tiger 10-yard line.
Taylor ran the ball in from 12 yards away four plays later to bring the score to 14-6.
Comer made good on a turnover late in the third quarter, taking the ball thirty yards to the end zone on a 6-play drive. Kelly scored for the second time on a 7-yard run, tying the ballgame with 9:50 remaining.
Comer had two more opportunities after Winterboro scored with 5:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. After a three-and-out by the Tiger offense, their defense prevented Winterboro from gaining a first down.
Comer received the ball back with 2:38 remaining. But a fumble at the Winterboro 43 was recovered by the defense, ending the Tigers' chances.
Comer is scheduled to face Clay County on the road on Friday. Winterboro will take on Loachapoka at home.
