FAYETTEVILLE – The Winterboro Bulldogs scored early and often on their way to 46-8 rout of the Fayetteville Wolves in the region opener for both teams on Friday.
Fayetteville won the toss and deferred to the second half, which gave Winterboro the ball to start the game. The Bulldogs started at their own 31-yard line and drove down the field in two minutes and six seconds. A 5-yard touchdown run by Colby Maddox capped the drive. The extra point attempt was good to give Winterboro the early lead.
The Bulldogs added to their lead quickly when Cardri Duncan intercepted a pass from Fayetteville quarterback Jared Williamson and ran into the end zone for a touchdown with 9:25 to go in the first quarter. The extra point was good to give Winterboro a 14-0 lead.
The Bulldogs scored twice more in the first quarter, once on an 88-yard run by Branon Wilson and again on a 53-yard play by Nicholas Pernell.
Winterboro led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter. Bulldogs head coach Adam Fossett started substituting players early in the second quarter, but the points continued to pile up in Winterboro’s favor. The Bulldogs scored twice more – a 56-yard run by junior Thomas Johnson and an 11-yard run by Luransa Hardy – in the second period to take a 40-0 lead at halftime. Winterboro put up 313 yards of total offense in the first half.
Johnson finished with 131 yards and two touchdowns on three carries. His final touchdown came on a 65-yard run on the first play from scrimmage for Winterboro in the second half.
The teams played 8-minute quarters in the second half and Fayetteville got on the board with 2:05 remaining in the game. Quarterback Zach McGrady connected with Williamson on a 60-yard touchdown catch and run. The two hooked up again on the two-point conversion to give the Wolves their final score, 46-8.
“Winterboro has a good ball team,” Fayetteville head coach Chris Sherbert said. “We’ve got to execute better.”
Winterboro starting quarterback Josh Taylor rushed for 51 yards on three carries. Wilson added 94 yards on two carries.
Fayetteville’s Williamson rushed for 42 yards on six carries.
The Wolves move to 0-2 on the season and will travel to face Wadley in region play on Friday. Winterboro moves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play. The Bulldogs host Talladega County Central on Friday.
