Verbena turned the ball over too many times to be competitive with Winterboro Friday on Senior Night.
The Red Devils lost 13 turnovers and lost the game, 59-12.
Winterboro had four turnovers of its own, allowing Verbena to stay in the game through one quarter. The Red Devils trailed 6-0 after one period thanks to a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Taylor Garrett on a fourth down play.
The Bulldogs went up 13-0 on a 27-yard run by Curtavius Gray less than one minute into the second quarter, but Verbena answered with an 88-yard pass play from Jaryus Wilson to Bay Lucas that gained all the way down to the Winterboro 2-yard line after a penalty was tacked on.
Duante Talley ran it in from there, with 10:08 on the clock.
Talley led Verbena in rushing with 56 yards on 11 carries even though he didn’t play in the second half.
It was all Winterboro (9-0 overall, 7-0 region) from there. The visitors were up 38-6 at halftime and led 52-6 before VHS (2-7, 0-7) scored again.
This time, it was a 10-yard pass from Wilson to Phillip Hensley, who outleapt a defender for the ball at the goal line.
Jesse Ellis led the Verbena defensive effort with 14 tackles.
The Devils visit Billingsley (5-3, 4-2) next week for a non-region game that is also the last of the regular season for both teams.
